Joint MSD/DoL Quarterly Regional Labour Market Reports - November 2008 2008-11-07
The regional reports convey key labour market information on twelve regions of New Zealand. They include annual trends in labour force participation rates, employment rates and unemployment rates from Statistics New Zealand’s Household Labour Force Survey and benefit figures from the Ministry of Social Development’s beneficiary records.
Employment and Unemployment - November 2008 2008-11-07
The HLFS showed the labour market continued to ease over the September 2008 quarter, in line with other surveys. While employment rose by 0.1% over the quarter, the unemployment rate rose from 3.9% to 4.2%, the highest rate since the December 2003 quarter.
Work-related Injury Claims - November 2008 2008-11-05
By the end of March 2008, there were 67 claims for work-related fatal injuries1 that occurred in 2007. However, this figure is provisional and is expected to increase as workers who have been seriously injured may fail to recover from their injuries. The 2007 figure of 67 is a fall of 14 from the corresponding provisional figure for 2006.
Wage Growth - September 2008 Quarter 2008-11-04
Annual wage growth in the adjusted LCI (which measures changes in pay rates for a fixed set of jobs and excludes performance related pay increases) increased to 3.6% in the September 2008 quarter above market expectations of 3.3%. This is the highest rate recorded since the LCI began in 1992 and is up from 3.5% recorded in the June 2008 year.
External Migration Factsheet – September 2008 2008-10-22
External Migration data for September 2008 were released by Statistics New Zealand on 22 October 2008. Unless otherwise stated, all data refer to permanent and long-term (PLT, i.e. 12 months or more) migration, are not seasonally adjusted, and are rounded to the nearest 100.
Economic Growth - June 2008 Quarter 2008-10-22
Economic output fell by 0.2% in the June 2008 quarter following a 0.3% fall in the March 2008 quarter. This is the first time since 1998 that GDP has fallen for two consecutive quarters. Annual average economic growth remained relatively high at 2.6%, reflecting strong economic growth over 2007.
Benefit Receipt of Migrants to New Zealand – 2007 2008-10-21
This report details findings from the 12th annual information match between Ministry of Social Development benefit and Department of Labour immigration data to determine the extent of benefit receipt by migrants. In 2007, the benefit rate was significantly lower than in 2002, falling by 1.5 percent.

Managing workplace health risks posed by pentachlorophenol and dioxin contamination in soil 2008-10-16
A factsheet. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) and dioxin are two toxic substances contained in a timber treatment used in sawmills until 1988. Both toxins are now likely to be present in soil at most current and former sawmill sites, although the level of contamination will vary significantly from site to site. Contamination may also be present at other sites where sawdust or soil from sawmills has been dumped.
Dorfox meets the standard: Gender-inclusive Job Evaluation 2008-10-10
This is the first case study to look at compliance with New Zealand Standard NZS 8007:2006 Gender-inclusive Job Evaluation. The Gender-inclusive Job Evaluation Standard (NZS 8007:2006) is a voluntary standard developed by Standards New Zealand through a Standards Development Committee of job evaluation providers, equity advisors, the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand, employer groups, and unions from the public and private sectors.

This report tells us how New Zealanders feel about their work-life balance and identifies trends that are developing over time. This research has tracked successes since 2006 and also provides a benchmark for reviewing the impact of the Employment Relations (Flexible Working Arrangements) Amendment Act 2007, which came into effect in July 2008.

The Government established the Work-Life Balance Programme in 2004 in order to promote a better balance between paid work and life outside work. A key element of this programme was the “Workplace Project” originally conceived as an action-research project.
Refugee Resettlement: A literature review 2008-08-20
This international literature review on refugee resettlement policy, completed in November 2007, provides part of the information platform for progressing a multi-year, cross-departmental research project being led by the Department of Labour called "Refugees plus ten: perspectives on integration, identity and community". It also contributes to a Department of Labour-led review of aspects of refugee policy related to the resettlement of refugees.

Annotated Bibliography of New Zealand Literature on Migrant and Refugee Youth 2008-08-11
This annotated bibliography was commissioned by the Department of Labour to provide a comprehensive account of the current evidence on settlement and social inclusion for migrant and refugee young people in New Zealand. A key aim of the bibliography is the identification of evidence relating to factors that facilitate or act as barriers to the successful settlement and inclusion of these young people.
