Statement of Intent 2008-12

The Department of Labour’s Statement of Intent 2008-12, “Our plan to keep New Zealand working,” outlines the Department’s progress in improving labour market outcomes for the benefit of all New Zealanders and the economy.  And it sets out how the Department expects to conduct its operations towards achieving its outcomes in the period 2008-12.

The Department makes a major contribution to the quality of life for New Zealand workers and businesses.  Our primary role is to improve the performance of the labour market and those within it, in turn strengthening the economy and improving New Zealand’s standard of living.

A significant challenge for employers in the current period of high labour market participation and low unemployment is access to skilled workers.

The Department is working with its social partners to actively match the skills of workers and the needs of employers.  We are attracting and processing skilled workers interested in migrating to New Zealand.  And we are continuing to support increases in productivity which will fuel economic growth.

It’s important people understand the Department’s work and the difference it makes and, to this end, the Statement of Intent 2008-12 will be an important document.
